WHAT MADE YOU PICK UP MUSIC: My oldest sister Jodie was the musically talented one in the family when I was growing up. Her and her husband, Brian, played in a band and also taught music lessons out of their house. They both always encouraged me to play an instrument. So I decided one Christmas to ask my parents for a drum set. After struggling to learn how to play the first couple weeks, I was aggravated with it all and decided to learn guitar. Once I figured out that I was worse at guitar then the drums I decided to pick the sticks back up. A couple years went by I was able to play decent but I didn't know what any of it meant. I didn't have any kind of style or any kind of dynamics…I was just loud. So eighth grade rolled around and my dad gave me the ultimatum to either play in the school band or play a sport. I hated sports so of course I joined the school band. I never had any kind of musical training before so the first half of the school year I was lost. Around that time I started to take lessons from Brian to learn more about reading sheet music and counting out rhythms. So with this combination it all started to make sense. By 9th Grade my dad gave me the same option but this time it included R.O.T.C. and there was no way I was joining that so I joined the school band for a 2nd year. My teacher Mr. Sanders was a badass. Without him I don't think I’d be half the drummer I am today. After the experience of the class I was hooked. There was a moment in that school year where I made a promise to myself to never stop playing and to never stop learning. In retrospect of all this, this is a tough question to answer because its not just 1 thing that made me want to play, It’s the combination of all these things. This band alone has helped remind me why its awesome to play and how much fun it all can be. Honestly, this band is why I picked up playing. It was fate.
WHAT’S THE CRAZIEST THING THAT’S HAPPENED IN THE BAND THUS FAR: I’ll never forget the first ever show I played with the band. I was the most nervous id ever been in my life. I know I was messing up every song and losing tempos left and right. Lee can be very intimidating when you’re messing up a song. Even for my first time he didn't cut me any slack. I was verbally accosted by Lee after I butchered one song. I think he said, "Where were you on that one DIP SHIT!" At the time he might as well have just punched me in the face. Speaking of, that man has the most sinister look when you screw up. It’s the equivalent to looking in to the eyes of Satan. I learned all this that night. I’ll never forget it for the rest of my life.
FAVORITE HISTORICAL FIGURE AND WHY: Jimi Hendrix because he changed the game for the guitar. He is one of the more influential musicians because of his range of genres. He helped popularize the wahwah petal and without that Robbie wouldn't be as funky. Also Mitch Mitchell is one of my favorite drummers and without Jimi I might have never heard him play.
